Sector: Aviation

Location: Manchester Airport

Client: Manchester Airport Group (MAG).

Value: £1,200,000.

Duration: 8 weeks (September to October 2024).

Scope:

  • Service Clearance.

  • Saw-cutting, break out and replacement of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) bays associated to Stand 112.

  • Asphalt surfacing, with installation of Glasgrid© pavement reinforcement system with the central Taxiway.

  • Polymer grout stabilisation of concrete bays.

  • Removal and re-installation of cable chases.

  • Removal and re-installation of Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) units.

  • Joint sealing.

Summary: This project involved the intensive rehabilitation of a circa 2,500M2 airside area at Manchester Airport, following the identification of cracking and other defects.  Key drivers on this project included:

  • Meeting a key hand-back date (linked to the upcoming Pier 2 works).

  • Minimising disruption within an operationally critical part of the airfield.

  • Providing MAG with a robust solution, so further disruptive closures would not be required for the foreseeable future.

During the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) period, our team worked closely with MAG, the project designer, and key stakeholders to develop the design, methodology, and phasing strategy, with a focus on these drivers. It was not possible to fully close the area for the duration of the works, and “Code E” aircraft movements had to be maintained, so the site layout and phasing were key considerations. The agreed solution a temporary centre-line diversion, meticulously phased delivery, and the use of various types of fencing to maintain a level of operational capacity.

We successfully delivered the works over an 8-week period, meeting the agreed hand-back dates, and maintaining an exemplary safety record. The entire scheme was developed and delivered in a period of 14 weeks, demonstrating the significant benefits and efficiencies which can be achieved through collaborative working.

"To ensure uninterrupted access to Pier 1 stands throughout the construction period, a temporary diverted centreline has been successfully implemented. This milestone reflects the culmination of extensive optioneering, solution development, and meticulous planning.

It has been a remarkable collaborative effort across MAN, with teams uniting around a shared goal: delivering critical airfield infrastructure improvements on a tight timeline.

With a crucial few weeks ahead, thanks to (Principal Contractor Allied Infrastructure and] all contributors whose dedication and expertise have laid the foundation for success. These works are key to ensuring robust airfield performance as we move toward the next phase of airport development.”

Jose Perez, Programme Delivery Manager – MAG Capital Delivery.

"Allied Infrastructure has been an exceptional partner throughout their recent appointment as Planned Renewals & Reactive Support contractor at Manchester Airport. Their project management and delivery capability stood out from day one with clear communication, proactive planning, and a consistent focus on safety and operational continuity in a highly complex, airside environment.

The November Alpha taxiway rehabilitation scheme presented unique challenges due to the complex location, tight timescales, and interface with our new pier 2, but Allied’s team demonstrated professionalism, flexibility, and a collaborative spirit that made the entire process smooth and efficient. They coordinated seamlessly with our key stakeholders, adapted quickly to changing site conditions, and delivered high-quality work ahead of programme and to an excellent standard. They also provided exceptional insight into innovative, versatile materials that we were able to utilise to enable programme constraints were satisfied.

Their commitment to collaboration and problem-solving has been invaluable over the last few years at Manchester Airport, and the outcome November Alpha and numerous other schemes reflects the quality and care they put into every phase of the project. We’re grateful for their contribution and would highly recommend Allied Infrastructure for any airport or civil engineering works where reliability, expertise, and partnership truly matter."

Joel Greasley, Project Manager – Turner & Townsend (seconded to MAG).
